What’s Your Calling?

By way of background, “calling cards” originated in 15th-century China as a way to announce a visitor’s intention to meet with someone. It evolved in 18th-century Europe, especially in France and Italy, as an essential social accessory and status symbol for the wealthy upper classes.  The calling card functioned as a precursor to both modern business cards and social networking and was utilized in a variety of ways, including social introductions, announcing one’s presence, social gatekeeping, or an expression of friendship or love.
